Mom and Associate Professor @UNH. Runs the UNH Phyto Lab, we maybe have too much fun. Love all things marine and microbial.
Anyone use case studies in their oceanography classes? If so, mind sharing examples? Bonus if they are biology focused. #oceanography

Grading the final assignment in my biological oceanography class and found my personal ethos so distilled, it is amazing.

Thanks, I hate it. 🧪
The Trump administration is recommending the elimination of the scientific research division at NOAA.

What about my disabled for life brother? When he complains for not getting a check, who is going to be brave enough to call him a ‘fraudster’ to my face?
Trump’s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick says if Social Security skipped a check, his mother-in-law wouldn’t complain—and if you would, it indicates you are probably a fraudster. Insane.

In a bright spot, my 12 year old son chose cyanobacteria to win March Mammal Madness #2025MMM this year, and I couldn't be more proud.

I don’t know a single person in a research position who hasn’t felt traumatized over the last month. Kudos to everyone who is still making it to work in the morning.

My colleagues 3D printed this for me. Also another colleague brought cookies. Joy!

My husband and I are decompressing from *waves hands* in the evening by forcing our 12 year old son to listen to us poorly sing and wax on about all the greatest hits from the 1990s. Highly recommend. @cargoculture.bsky.social

This morning feels particularly dark.
I don't know how else to put this: This is fucking insane.

NSF, a $10 billion grantmaking agency, is planning to lay off between a quarter and a half of its staff in the next two months.
Science funding agency threatened with mass layoffs
National Science Foundation staff heard the plans at a meeting Tuesday.

Anyone know what happens to grants that DO have some of those "list words" in them? I submitted a grant in July 2024, which does for sure have some of those words in the mandated-at-the-time broader impact section. It currently sits still pending.

One of our senators came to a science symposium I attended today. Her advice? "Keep calling and pushing" for unfreezing sci funding. WHO? I called your office repeatedly and you just voted to approve some of Trump's cabinet -- so who exactly am I supposed to advocate to?

100% this! We need to start having discussions about this the longer all this (waves hands) goes on.
Senior scientists who will be reviewing tenure & promotion files in the future - please remember that the effects of many of these executive orders will disproportionately affect researchers from marginalized groups - often the same folks penalized by COVID-related delays, childcare issues, etc. 🧪
