A vignette or diorama. You ever get those deep rounded pressed paper lettuce or spinach containers at the grocery? Some people see an easy salad; I see a way to waste at least ten evenings making weird stuff out of junk and old toys while watching 18th Century Bel Canto operas by Hasse, Vinci, Vivaldi, Handel, etc. So, I used the container to form a cathedral-like setting. Please bear with me as I describe the display: From top, a Prussian Blue ceiling with gold stars painted all over; the walls and background are painted gold, and the texturing on the paper container has what looks like three grapes impressed at regular intervals-- this works quite well for the them, and 'hats-off' to the remarkable talent of the packaging designer. On the two side walls are religious paintings by the 18th C. Master Gig Keane: "Saint Mittens," and "Ecce Gato." The back wall is taken up by organ pipes, and a votive ship hangs from a gold chain. This is inspired by the ancient tradition, but more specifically by a Church I visited in Montreal, which had a container-ship model. So as not to copy them, I made mine a bulk-carrier. Obscured by the chain, is a round silver star with a round opening (available at most hardware stores)-- it frames a black cat's face. Those pipes go down to an organ, with a proud looking ceramic cat about to offer recital. To the left of the organ is a large glass container with a Fir tree inside. To the right is a row boat, phonograph, and sewing machine. Sitting on the edge of the floor at each side are to 'tram passengers' figures from the 1960s with cat heads-- big, smiling, yellow-eyed, cat heads. Beneath the floor are coffins, one of which has a monkey in it. Another monkey-- yellow and translucent-- seems to be doing Yoga.

I don’t always go to church, but when I do…. Haupt Kirche St.Michaelis, Hamburg. I’m a big fan of organs and organ music.
The bimah of St. Michaelis, ornate with gold on white arched walls. To the right is the air traffic control tower. I don’t know what half this stuff is, so just imagine a big fancy church from the 18th century, repaired numerous times after various disasters such as lightning, fire, and bombs. Wooden benches are in the foreground. The organ at the church: slate gray pipes framed with reddish wood trimmed in gold. The curvy balconies beneath are white with gold trim. The walls around are also white with curved arches and gold trimmed columns. The balcony in the foreground has multi-bulbed chandelier/sconces, or whatever those things are called.

Full-size replica of a Sugpiaq two-person kayak. Built from a scale drawing in "Kayaks of Alaska" by Harvey Golden. This wooden frame will be covered with cloth for use. Original (seal or sea-lion covered) is at the Musée de la Marine, Paris, who received it in 1922. #kayaks #Alaska #boatbuilding
A two-person kayak frame-- a historical design used by the Sugpiaq of South central Alaska (Alaska Peninsula, Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound vicinities). These were used for hunting and general travel. The frame is comprised of many strips of wood lashed together, and it is all painted red. Two circular openings on the deck denote the cockpits. The frame would have been covered in seal or sea-lion hides, but this will be covered in cloth, and then waterproofed with varnish. The kayak is just over 20 foot 6 inches long and 28 inches wide.

Slightly dispersed mackerel skies, bright blue behind the hundreds of small cumulus puffs. Horizon is cottonwoods of Miller Sands on right, with the high ground of the Washington shore, forested with spruce and hemlock; center is the hill near the former town of Brookfield. The hill forms a point and is named after the African American Oregon Pioneer, Wilkes Expedition ship-jumper, and Antarctic explorer James Saules (Wha...? Look him up!!!!). In the foreground are my ten little piggies on the rear coaming of a hand-built wooden row boat, based on a Howard Chapelle drawing of a historic 'Garvey' from New Jersey, ca. 1900; Garvey's are general purpose gotten' around boats suitable for cargo, and in smaller forms such as this, for bird hunting. The Green-tipped oars are drawn in and resting on the aft deck of the boat. The wooden stern rail has a notch cut in it for sculling (just behind my right big toe . . . I forget which piggy that is).
