Today I learned that the proto-Slavic word for forest is totally different from BCS “šuma,” which may instead be a paleo-Balkan borrowing with a cognate in modern Albanian.

82 years to the day (Nov. 12th, 1941) since members of the Muslim community in Banja Luka, NW Bosnia, signed a public resolution condemning the crimes of the NDH, Nazi Germany's Croatian puppet state. I read through it the other day and was surprised the anniversary was so near.

Thinking lately about this great 2015 piece from @abubanda.bsky.social in which he translated a 1981 article by anthropologist Nina Seferović on Muslims from 🇧🇦 who emigrated to Palestine in the 1880s. As his preface states below, nearly 70 years later they'd be expelled as Palestinians in the Nakba.

As his preface states below, nearly 70 years later they'd be expelled as Palestinians in the Nakba.
Work on Muslim print culture in the Indian Ocean world was a big influence on my own research on the late and post-Ottoman Balkans, so it's nice to see a special issue devoted to the topic in the International Journal of Islam in Asia. I hope more Balkan specialists draw on this thriving field.

The Bosnian incident is admittedly pretty obscure. The trigger here was an SPD politician, Saskia Esken, canceling a meeting with Bernie Sanders (whose entire family of Polish Jews was murdered in the Holocaust) because of this statement.
On a much lighter note, I was convinced you were Italian!
