There are three powerful messages that turn voters against GOP proposals to take Medicaid away from people who do not meet a work requirement. After hearing them, opposition to work requirements rises to 63% -- with 42% of Republican voters and 72% of independents opposing them.

When voters hear two sides of the issue, by a large margin they are more concerned about the prospect of people in need losing their healthcare as a result of Medicaid work requirements than by the prospect of people abusing the system without work requirements.

In our recent polling for @protectourcare.org, we find that a small majority of voters oppose a Republican proposal to establish new work requirements for Medicaid when they first hear about it. Most voters do not start out with a strong view on the subject one way or the other.

I have seen several commentators say that the issue of democracy did not resonate more because it is "too abstract." A survey we conducted last December offers a different possible explanation: Young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters want to improve our democracy, not just protect it.
