Going out on a #chemsky limb to state h-index +1 is way less exciting than tool-index +1…even though it required the inevitable second trip of the morning to the hardware store (queue the Tim “The Toolman” Taylor Grunts)

The best part of the talk was having the fire department join me and I was able to bring them up to be recognized for service to the site. It was important to remind people that we may not always be seen for the value we generate and we can all start doing a better job recognizing each other
December 15, 2024 at 8:56 PM
Finally, I discussed a bit about how when I wear either business casual clothing for work or Class B attire for fire training, different people say hello to me. How we dress still has an influence on who is comfortable talking to us. I invited the audience to always try and meet new people

Lesson 3: learning to drive fire engines/trucks it was necessary to lift my visual perspective above the chaos of all other lights, sirens, vehicles & insanity going on around us. By seeing your surroundings from a different perspective you can avoid tunnel vision and get the crew to scene safely

In fact the group of firefighters backing up the person on the nozzle are way more important and enable the person holding the nozzle to do their job, otherwise that person would be too exhausted to continue
December 15, 2024 at 8:56 PM
Lesson 2: the person who may be the visible face of value might not actually be the most important. Who is the most important firefighter when putting out a house fire? Is it the person holding the nozzle? A lot of people think so

Lesson 1: you can always generate value by picking up a broom. Many times you will be in situations where you are assigned a task. If nothing else, a floor can always be swept or trash picked up. People notice more often than you think

The title of the talk was “Black Hat for Life”, which means as a firefighter I’ve been comfortable not wearing the white or red helmets representing leadership but instead the black helmet
December 15, 2024 at 8:56 PM
Though I’ve focused on being a team member in the fire service, I’ve learned many lessons about how to be a better leader and also how to lead by example. These lessons help avoid leading something into the ground. Three lessons were discussed with an intent of generating value.

After playing the audio from an actual dispatch to a house fire I walked in the auditorium in full gear, here shown before going on air

In the talk I provided an overview of how I have worked as a firefighter at Merck but also developed my chemistry career. #ChemSky It started with a disclaimer that no one was injured in the scenarios presented and also that you can’t train enough:
