Cheers to @alpine-swift.bsky.social for ID'ing the Redwing from during the #BigGardenBirdwatch as an Icelandic (ssp Coburni). ID made from brown, dark flanks and extensive heavy neck streaking!
January 24, 2026 at 11:32 PM
Considering that the Redwing could be a possible Coburni ssp? Very streaked throat and extensive flank patch

Stars of the show of the RSPB #BigGardenBirdwatch this afternoon, with 7+ feeding in the golden light and Redwing in the neighbour's garden. Also Fieldfares, Sprawk, Stock Dove earlier in the day nr Chalfont St Giles/ Denham area bringing me to 99 for the year!

Chose to try for the Black-winged Kite at Ludham on 4th, albeit in the cold. Great to compensate on a dip of the kite with self found Jack Snipe, Bewick's Swans, a Cattle Egret and plenty of Mallards! Ended with 6 lifers and a few UK ticks, putting me on 180 for UK Life!

Wildfowl were a key highlight at Holkham, where we had 1000+ wigeon on Lady Anne's, a dapper Pintail (m) and 2000+ Pink-footed geese calling as they headed to roost. Surreal to see winter geese in the snow with 9 Barnacle, 2 WFG, Snipe and Lapwing from Joe Jordan hide!

We then head to Holkham Pines for the Hume's, for which we walked through in rather arctic conditions. After a relatively brief wait in comparison to others there, we heard the Hume's Warbler calling a couple times! Also supporting cast of Water Pipit and Firecrest!

2nd day was rather unproductive to start, as we chose to drive to Cley midway en route to the EBR, where we ended up getting large numbers of Pink-footed geese, 15 Avocets, 3+ Marsh Harrier with at least one male, lapwings and many Brent geese!

Ended a productive day at Roydon Common NWT to see the Hen Harriers come into roost. Had a suprise Short-eared owl with a male marsh harrier and eventually, after a painful wait in the cold, 2 males and 1 Juv/fem Hen Harriers showed! Felt very rewarded! Roe deer also!

Then, we headed on to Brancaster, to try and connect with the lingering Black-throated Diver, but to no avail, most possibly due to the wind. Nice to also see Red-breasted Merganser, Blackwit, Ringed Plovers, Dunlins, Turnstones and even more teals!

Great start to a trip to Norfolk at Titchwell RSPB, with 43 species! Though there was nothing on the sea, I think the photography opportunities compensated. Best was Rock Pipit, PFG, Tawny and a ton of close-in brents! No golden plovers and only one Avocet however.

On top of the wheatears, I also managed to get about 14 Desert Sparrows from when we arrived to the next mornin. Overall a great combo of birds to end my first visit to the Sahara. Quality over quantity at its best! #birding #moroccobirding #birdphotography

Throwback to a few seriously showy White-crowned Wheatears from the Sahara Desert in Morocco. One of two lifers from the Sahara and sensational views of this beauty!
