Yeah, tbh the faux sympathy makes the rejection worse. I’d much rather hear what people really think. What annoyed me the most was “we have excellent mental health services on campus” “we know this can be very confronting” etc….

I once had “i’m not saying this has no value, just that it has no value as a phd thesis at this university” and “speaking as a father I think you should walk away from this thesis”. You know what, life went on and I eventually got a version of it published elsewhere…
