Kansas City is refusing access to ICE at all public schools. The Kansas state university system is refusing access without duly issued warrants.

If you don't pay enough for someone to do the job properly without material loss, then the only candidates you will get are those with independent means. This hardly represents most of America.

I feel called out by this.

The average state worker doesn't need to commute between their home state and DC multiple times a year. Great in theory, horrible in execution.

Exactly this. I have been considering a run for office. I think I have the background to be effective. But I can't afford the income hit. State offers virtually no compensation. Federal would cut my income in half. I have a kid in college and a mortgage. I can't afford that and rent in DC.
