Everyone keeps saying this is the first time since 1980 that a sitting Calgary mayor has been defeated.

But in 1989, Al Duerr beat Mayor Don Hartman. Alderman Hartman had been appointed mayor when Ralph Klein resigned, but he WAS mayor, no less so than if he had been elected to the job.

I’m so glad I went to hear Jane Goodall at Calgary’s Jubilee Auditorium 15 years ago, on October 24, 2010. I went because my then eight-year-old son wanted me to take him. Jonas is now a grad student and the co-author of a scholarly science paper.

Quick 30-minute visit to synagogue today, and I hit all the highlights: Torah reading, Haftorah, and shofar blasts. Time well spent! #ShanahTovah to all who observe the holiday.
