Not every doctor visit should be free. The most common reasons to go: a check-up, advice, referrals, should all be free.

If the doctor has to do something more complicated, then, depending on financial status, a slight co-pay is acceptable.

Update: I got 3 more fillings (8 total) and a wisdom tooth pulled. Another $900. It's a lot of work, and all preventive to keep me healthy and out of pain. I'm incredibly grateful to live in a country where dentistry is affordable, but we need to do more to help those who are struggling. #auspol

Yeah, it must seem bizarre that we're complaining that it's not cheaper.
But the system does have issues. Getting doctors and dentist in regional and low density rural areas is one of the biggest. Hopefully expanding Medicare (just like the USA Medicare but for everyone) will help.

In contrast, I had my teeth checked in France with no indication I had rotting teath. I don't know if it was a bad dentist, a language barrier, a poor x-ray, or due to their socialized system that it was missed.
