If anything it’s more prevalent now, people just don’t test or care if they pass to others now.

I thought the opposite, I was bored for a lot of the first half, and the pacing felt off, only to really enjoy the later episodes. I agree with your rating though, it feels like it has all the right ingredients for a good Alien story but wasn’t done as well as it could have been.
