Simply being seen on-stage or with a camera on the other side of the barrier makes you a part of the show, like-it-or-not.

Use it to your advantage.

Liven them up! Be enthusiastic with them, sing along, and the right people WILL engage with you and get you golden shots.

When shooting highlight especially, I only need 1s of ftg at a time for these shots. Getting them energetic first and then introducing the camera goes miles for results.

THE CROWD

If the crowd respond well, get footage of them. If they’re not moving, avoid them or use camera moves that make them seem more lively.

Recognise what pockets of the crowd that have the most energy, and target those spots for your shots.

THE ARTIST

Keep time with the beat for your camera moves.

Recognise patterns, tempo changes to figure out upcoming beat drops or big moments in songs & mixes.

If they’re mixing something live get footage of them on the decks. If they’re being energetic, get body shots.

BE OBSERVANT

You need to constantly be looking 𝐚𝐧𝐝 listening between three core elements.

▶️ The Artist
▶️ The Crowd
▶️ Your Monitor

This will come with experience, and can be massively helped with quality preparation.

SAFETY

Doing video, you’re moving a lot without looking where you’re going a lot more than photogs.

Learn the stage! Take time to walk the stage to find where it ends, or where there might trip hazards and holes. The more you walk the more you can put it to muscle memory, and focus on the shots.

PEOPLE SKILLS (2)

Get to know your artists, even on a late call taking five or ten minutes for a pre-show brief will make everyone happy.

Understand boundaries for physical proximity to artists, where you can & can’t be on stage, and the things you can and can’t film.

PEOPLE SKILLS

Introduce yourself! Do not just show up, walk on stage and start shooting. It’s a quick way to make everyone uncomfortable, piss people off, and not get booked again.

Say hello to the promoter, agent or artist who booked you. You need a pass anyway, so get chatting! Which leads to 👇

GETTING AUDIO (2)

Plug a Rode Wireless Mic’s 3.5mm input into the REC OUT of the mixer via a -25dB attenuator cable.

Plug the receiver into your camera’s 3.5mm mic input, and get clean live audio in-camera.

Use this in L and your regular mic to R then convert to mono if you need crowd noise.

GETTING AUDIO

Plug your smartphone straight into the mixer with a USB cable, use the DJM-REC app, pick if you want to include mics or not, hit record and leave it. The mixer will charge your phone, so just make sure you’ve got free space for the file.

Add a mic on your camera, then sync in post.
