Sometimes I go over waterfalls in big rubber boats. Sometimes I walk to them in big rubber boots. Sometimes I scrape big metal bowls with rubber spatulas.

Taking my hs junior (how did THAT happen?) on a tour of NorCal colleges in a few weeks. The best side quest is going to be spending the night in a treehouse - there’s a BNB in Cave Junction where all the rooms are up in trees.

I got a new raft!

It’s amazing the difference a couple of inches makes 😏

It’s really hard to make happy faces when you’re out of breath.

I think I may have a new favorite river. The Main Salmon was incredible!
July 14, 2025 at 12:07 PM
✅Owyhee
✅Wallowa/Grande Ronde
✅ Deschutes (May)
✅ Middle Fork of the Salmon (June)
🔲 Main Salmon (July)
🔲 Hells Canyon (August)

Well… the MFS weather was great for 3 of the days. It was cold and wet for the others, but the flow was ideal. Here’s a clip of a rapid called skijump:

OMW to Maupin for that Deschutes (Sherars to the Columbia) trip. Should be v nice. Last chance to dial in the gear before the MFS next month!

Last week at this time I was on the banks of the Grande Ronde, getting ready to float a second day. Such a pretty river.

I’m still waiting for the pics and video (including a drone!) from the others on my Owyhee trip, but the river was awesome! A great mix of whitewater and big canyons, with great weather and new friends!

Made sushi last night - highly recommend for a fun evening in.

Making spam fried rice for tonight and smoked salmon chowder for tomorrow because there are so many leftovers

@swooshmcduck.bsky.social you’re really letting your hair grow out, aren’t you?

Just when I thought it was safe to start scheduling other stuff…

I got an invite to raft the middle fork of the Salmon - a grail trip - in mid-June. So now I’m probably going to cancel my two of my Oregon overnights because this one will be 8 days. In the middle of nowhere. Continuous whitewater.

A little rallycross flub action today. Just took a hard line (in all the ways) on this corner.

On the way to Enumclaw for a Rallycross thing and this was part of the view.

Such a great show!

The Clackamas River is also going to be super high for a while. This is, uh, high.

I’m sure the NOAA and USGS folks who make sure the public knows about flooding are exempt from the DOGE-ing currently going on, right? RIGHT?

Is it just me, or is the wordle bot getting a little sassy? Yesterday it was all “well, yeah, your guess was in the dictionary but I didn’t think it was a real solution so I don’t count it” and today it was ✌🏼finger quoting ✌🏼 me for being better than jt fairly often.

Are you a bot, sir? Your response tracks.

Here’s the NOAA projection for the Sandy River, with a peak projected just below flood stage. That peak is about 8x the amount of water that was there when I rafted it on New Year’s Day. That delta is about 1/3 rain and 2/3 melted snow, with highs up to the 50s at Timberline later this week. 😱

RIP to a substantial part of our snowpack and get some sandbags ready if you live near anything that’s flooded in the last 5 years. Big, wet, and warm gonna be here for the first half of the week.
