Now I'm not saying this is just because of me, but old Twitter followers of mine might remember my consternation at the mix up of upper/lowercase in the month of March in the last few years' worth of WH Smiths weekly planners...
The banner across the top of a spiral bound weekly planner. March is written on lowercase whilst April (and all other months) is written in uppercase. Mild twitching eye rage ensued.

Well. I opened the 2026 version of the exact same planner and LO AND BEHOLD the error is fixed! Sanity restored.

This evening's run was....delightful (dog went on strike shortly after this)

And it's not just about doing the work, even though it might seem a bit tricky (though that would be nice), it's also about WANTING to do the work and recognising why it is important - why disabled students are important. Because, currently, a lot is signalling to them that they are not.

I've been keeping a running log of every report about disabled students since 2017, for no particular reason other than to provide evidence to senior leaders of all the issues we already know about. The recurring themes are as old as time (well, have been around for all of my 25 year career)
A list, as follows: • Administrative barriers • Financial barriers • Poor support for transitions into and out of university, as well as between levels or types of study • Inconsistent practices leading to inconsistence experiences • Inflexibility and unwillingness to change on the part of Higher Education Providers • Stigma and stereotyping • Monolithic treatment of disabled students • Low levels of awareness, understanding and training for staff and fellow students • Lack of top-down leadership on issues relating to disabled students • Specific issues relating to the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact on disabled students. • The experience of disabled PhD students is particularly poor.

Today's early morning dog walk featured this fellow scaring the bejesus out of the dog 🦙, and the infamous local wild white rabbit that I've successfully failed to photograph so many times now but definitely exists 🐰

But...the whole point should be to develop inclusive assessment methods rather than continually ghettoising disabled students and forcing the admin onto them and the teams who support them. Reasonable adjustments to assessment are an industry with a cost.
The triangle of assessment. Inclusive assessment at the base caters for the maximum number of people without other adjustments required. Then, making adjustments to standard assessment will cover most other disabled students for whom reasonable adjustments might apply if inclusive assessment doesn't work for them. Finally, alternative assessments are at the apex and should only apply to the smallest number of students possible.
