From the Liverpool Daily Post, 25 September 1989.

Evan Hunter lounges in Liverpool whilst promoting 'Downtown'.

It appears that Tatsuya Nakadai died a few days ago, at the age of 92.

He played Inspector Tokura in Kurosawa's High and Low - essentially the Steve Carella character in the fantastic adaptation of King's Ransom.

And still they keep making these films! And still they keep not interviewing me about them (which is kind of fine because I’m still battle-scarred from the ones I watched)

Interesting to see how the trades were advertising the novel Mothers and Daughters by #EvanHunter. Especially as it never made it to the screen in the end.

Has anyone read it? It's 900 pages in it's original edition and it's staring at me from the bookshelf, looking intimidating.

Guess which 87th Precinct book this film is adapted from, just from the provided still...

That is odd! I can’t make out the name really, but here’s an example from my shelves.

And his first junior #sciencefiction #book, Find The Feathered Serpent from 1952. Credited to Evan Hunter.

This is my new favourite contemporary review of the first of #EdMcBain #87thPrecinct series, Cop Hater.

Holidaying in the U.K. means visits to National Trust properties. National Trust properties means little second-hand bookshops.

And so this is the score so far this week!

Penguin Books launched as a company on this day, 90 years ago!

In the UK they were the original paperback publisher for 16 of the first 20 #87thPrecinct books* by #EdMcBain. Some of the early editions have fantastic cover designs by Alan Spain and Don Hunstein.

Sometimes you just can’t afford a nice early edition, so you end up with a New English Library reissue…

And Robert McGinnis's last book cover for #EdMcBain - not for the #87thPrecinct this time - came in 2016, courtesy of @hardcasecrime.bsky.social's reissue of Cut Me In (AKA The Proposition by Hunt Collins)

(I think) His first 'first edition' cover for the #87thPrecinct series was for Lady, Lady, I Did It! in its Permabook paperback edition in 1962.

Farewell then, Robert McGinnis. He wasn't the first artist on #EdMcBain's #87thPrecinct series of books, but from the second printing of the early stories in the early sixties, and going forward, he was used.

Look how dynamic this is. Absolute glamour, absolute shock.

So, a little over 70 years ago you'd have been able to go to the movies (in the US at least) and watch BLACKBOARD JUNGLE.

Even before it opened on general release, the controversy had made it a hot-topic. MGM really wanted to play on this with their various advertising tie-ins! SOCK!

Better brush up my schoolboy French!

Thank you, @morganlbrown.bsky.social, for this kind addition to my #edmcbain #87thPrecinct bookshelf - the French edition of Poison (which tells me that the titre original was Poison. Isn’t language fascinating?!)

Over on one of the Facebook Ed McBain fan pages, I was alerted to this curiosity from 1973...

The b-side to a single by "Pheon Bear" called 87th Precinct! Amazingly this is available on streaming services and sounds like Sham 69 on their way to a funky disco! (@morganlbrown.bsky.social!)

...and also these from Evan Hunter and another pseudonym, RIchard Marsten.

There's lots of sharing of book covers today, because it's World Book Day (although I think that's almost uniquely a UK thing. Maybe it's like the World Series, I dunno).

Anyway, here's a small selection from the shelves of #EvanHunter/#EdMcBain... first up some #87thPrecinct designs
