7. The resulting proposals—described as 'good ideas that can make a difference'—offer practical pathways to advance truly equitable climate action globally.

3. 💡 We also explored ideas to fund structural transformations, diversifying economies towards both low emissions and high employment. Furthermore, participants recognised the key role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in fostering green economic transformation and job creation.

2. 🎯 Discussions tackled critical areas, including navigating political frontiers and effectively mediating the necessary-but-disruptive conflicts arising from the shift to net zero emissions.

Toyota insurers sue Transnet MEC and Durban over losses from climate induced floods
For ca R6.5 billion (ca USD 325 million). Claim failure to have maintained critical flood prevention infrastructure and neglect in repairing after earlier floods.

Dr Grové Steyn of Meridian Economics gave a compelling presentation. One slide titled “The proposed balanced plan is not logically derived from the underlying analysis” and then further slides substantiating this very clearly

Congrats to Nathan Johnson, @mliebreich.bsky.social @dankammen.bsky.social Paul Ekins, R McKenna and I Staffel for a good Perspective in Nature Reviews Clean Technology – read ‘Realistic roles for hydrogen in the future energy transition‘ here www.nature.com/articles/s44...

But even in promising sectors, hydrogen faces challenges: production cost estimates vary by 5x, and 2030 targets look difficult to achieve once transport and storage costs are included. Most use is in industry, while profits in transport, which is more niche (5/7)

Fuel cell cars and home heating are among the least promising applications for hydrogen. Direct electric alternatives have advanced too quickly. Meanwhile, hydrogen's potential shines in industry, long-duration energy storage, and long-haul transport. Check out the figures – very informative (4/7)

Paper points out hype cycles since the 1970s After 50 years of promises, H₂ usage remains largely confined to industrial processes. And almost all hydrogen comes form fossil fuels. (2/7)

🧵 Been wondering about the hype on hydrogen? New paper provides a reality check, esp on potential role of H of various shades in decarbonisation energy systems. www.nature.com/articles/s44... (1/7)

The G20 Common Framework for debt restructuring has failed to provide meaningful relief. With the upcoming G20 in Africa, there's an opportunity to reform this system to prioritize sustainable development and climate resilience.

Climate vulnerability compounds Africa's challenges as countries face debt distress largely caused by external factors, not domestic policies.

7. 📝 Policy Sequencing: Policy sequencing is presented as a potential mechanism for capitalising on this momentum by growing low-carbon coalitions and gradually ratchetting up policy stringency over time.

2. 🌱 Historical Context: Over the twentieth century, South Africa developed a highly energy- and capital-intensive industrial structure, contributing to a high-emissions, low-employment development pathway

Minister Godongwana needs to show some fortidue and leadership. And raise some revenue
February 25, 2025 at 1:00 PM
If all this is in the budget, it is very different to the Discussion Document for Phase 2. Comments I submitted advised a SERIOUS INCREASE in the carbon tax rate, and rapid phase out of allowances to zero.

Makes on one wonder whether Treasury has heard, I mean really heard, there’s a climate crisis? In this critical decade, above is woefully inadequate. SA could not claim with a straight face to be a ‘responsible global citizen’
February 25, 2025 at 12:57 PM
SA National Treasury appears to be backtracking on carbon tax increase – tiny increase in nominal rate and increasing allowances. Assuming report in EN is accurate – Terence Creamer usually is careful, and is clear on source

A single actor’s emissions (components 3+4+5+6 in Fig 1) are not associated with 1.5 C. The emissions of others are bigger (even for large emitters). Also note 1.5 C depends on both past and future carbon budgets; the remaining CB is associated only with 0.43 C (IPCC WGI).
February 17, 2025 at 6:12 AM
Figure 1 shows temperature increase depends on past and future global carbon budgets, across time. Across space, single actor emissions are smaller than rest of world. Intergeneration equity - distributing effort over time, and distributionl equity among actors
February 17, 2025 at 6:12 AM
In a new paper Franck Lecocq and I argue that linking near-term mitigation actions by single actors to long-term global temperature goals like 1.5°C is questionable at best, and should be avoided. @Climate_Policy @IPCC_CH #IPCC-62 ; first 50 downloads free www.tandfonline.com/eprint/TDMKT...
