CURRENTLY, we go from The Spirit Temple build-up and there forward.

Understand that the academy days were in the past.

The main thing is that Mai's flashbacks of Azula are portrayed in a biased light. It's normal that Mai has lingering resentments for her.

I THINK, Maybe they're building up the scenes for something better to take place.

Because, like if they rushed into something like (e.g. redemption or making amends) in a ONE SHOT comic, it wouldn't be as good.

AGAIN, unlike the trilogies, Standalones are "time/space limited."

5. Even when Kiyi asks, Mai is seen to have some sort of sympathy for Azula now.

IMO‼️ This was the point of Mai's change of hearts for Azula IN THE COMIC.(5/5)

4. Mai stands up to the Academy BS and confronts the headmistress who's trying to "keep tradition."

And say that they indoctrinate children like Azula, and look at her state today"(4/5)

3. As the Story progresses, we see how a now grown-up & mature Mai realises the Academy's teaching on children and slowly remembers how it made (molded) Azula back then, thus again the flashbacks.(3/5)

2.Her friendship with Azula wasn't one that came naturally, but one that was "transactional." Thus, IT'S WHAT drove Mai's flashbacks of Azula being "the big bad bully."(2/5)

1. In the beginning, Mai did say "atleast Azula is not here anymore," BUT I THINK it's because atp, she associates the "bad memories" of the Academy with Azula.

From her first day, Mai's dad instilled that she SHOULD be friends with the princess for benefits and power. (1/5)
