Lyocell/Tencel is the new process, patented in 1982 (so off patent now) that is the cleanest of the processes yet, and can reclaim almost all of the chemicals needed to break down cellulose to spinnable fiber. But it’s still more expensive.
At microscopic level? Fibers are not very different at all.
