Brave Beats, you left us too soon!

I'd like to get to watching the older Kitaro series still! I watched the 6th as it was ongoing. Enthusiasm for the 5th seems especially strong from people I've seen!

One country's household name is another country's niche like always! They're just missing the boat! Though, I don't know much about High Card's level of popularity in Japan. Gegege no Nazo got so popular in Japan it was crazy!

Ah, that makes sense. I couldn't remember if I'd heard you talk about it before or not.

For other games, it is not readily available now, but The Starship Damrey on 3DS is an interesting short title. It is by the creators of Kamaitachi no Yoru, a famous one which I regretfully have yet to play.

Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for or if you've played it already, but I recommend Ghost Trick!

If you can read basic Japanese alright, I also recommend reading Usotsuki! Gokuoh-kun (manga)!

News on new Weekly titles usually comes from the monthly magazine first, so there might be something in the next issue, but the "blasts" of new titles have certainly slowed. Last issue just announced KamiKoro, serial Gal to Honya, and teased a 豪華企画 in next issue. The one before was two trial titles.

Seeing things get get cancelled before even reaching the "volume 1 test" now is concerning. I think there's a big issue with the limited reach of the platform itself to potential fans of manga. There's also a major reliance on social media buzz that is just not materializing for most titles.

I have not ever watched Milky Holmes still, but it is something I have got to watch one of these days as a Makoto Moriwaki work!

A versatile image! That particular scene is anime-original, though.

Nice to know a fellow Majin Bone appreciator!

That one actually comes from the old in-game Pokédex entry! It is localized as "Oddium Wanderus" in English.

I think that there have been some big hits in other genres out of Jump, such as Death Note, but I guess that has still not been enough to shake the perception of what "shonen" means to people.

On the other end, I get the feeling that a lot of people think "seinen" means "psychological thrillers"!
October 24, 2025 at 7:51 PM
Even if you're only looking at Shonen Jump, they've still got their share of other genres! They've got their comedies and their romances and their sports and such, too! But has the conversation on demographic labels really not advanced in the last 25 years or so?
October 24, 2025 at 7:28 PM
I might be kind of out of touch with the English-speaking manga / anime fan scene, but does "shonen" still mean "action battle genre" to everyone?
October 24, 2025 at 7:04 PM
I think that is doing anime as a medium a lot of disservice! But I think that people really need to be looking at anime adaptations as a separate work, not as a replacement.

Though, the very poor state of translated releases for manga is a big reason that I would await anime for things I like.

Formula Girl is not actually a ShuuCoro original, but a cross-posted title from Manga One. And it even had a physical volume 2!

Tenka volume 1 releases next month, and one-month sales for volume 1 seem to be the usual test for if ShuuCoro manga get axed or not. So it's likely "safe" until then.

I think all the originals from that batch of new titles have ended now. It's just expected at this point, but I wonder if things will ever get better.

I recommend checking out this blog post by Yuki Fukahori, the creator of the recently cancelled Money Wolf.
