“I watched the video where a Russian drone attacked a man, a woman, and their dog in the Kharkiv region. The Russians saw that they were civilians. The people were walking along the road with a white flag. Unfortunately, all of them died. The dog was still convulsing for a few seconds. It’s worth repeating once again. The main target of the Russians in this war is civilians. War crimes are a deliberate policy of the Russians. This is how they fight. In Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Mali, Libya, Ukraine. Pain is their tool of subjugation. The Russians deliberately inflict pain on the civilian population to break people’s resistance and occupy the country. In 2014, we asked survivors from captivity what had caused their arrest. Yes, there were targeted groups they hunted deliberately. But many people who ended up in the basements couldn’t name a single reason. I’ll say more: you can be an ardent supporter of Russia, but if you’re a civilian on territory captured by Russia, your life means nothing. Our mobile teams that arrived in the Kyiv region right after liberation heard people speak about the Russians with horror. They said they simply couldn’t believe the Russians were capazes of such things. And this was after the brutal torture-murders of Volodymyr Rybak in Horlivka and Reshat Ametov in Simferopol. After the cynical shooting of the green corridor near Ilovaisk. It’s time to believe your own eyes. Sadly, there are still people who for some reason think that if they’re “apolitical,” nothing will happen to them. The Russians don’t care. When they shelled residential buildings in Mariupol with tanks, they weren’t particularly interested in the political views of the people who lived there. Yes, you can deny reality for a while. But in war, the price of such denial can be very high.”

Cheney had understood the post-Watergate reforms from Nixon’s criminal presidency as a congressional usurpation, and he intended to roll them all back. Excluding Congress from wresting any transparency from his secret Energy Task Force was, to Cheney, part of the point. After 9/11, Yoo contended that during wartime – a circumstance conceivably permanent in a War on Terror – presidential authority is all but plenary. He likes his argument a lot less now that Trump uses it to murder fishermen in the Caribbean, but, like his Bush administration colleagues, takes no responsibility for authoring the authoritarian usurpations of power that he now bemoans.

The administration has also justified cuts like these on fiscal grounds: The federal budget deficit is massive, the Social Security retirement system could become insolvent in less than a decade and savings need to be found. But the disability program is paid for, via payroll taxes, by its own trust fund, separate from the one for the retirement program. So reductions in disability payments would not help the retirement system stay afloat. Indeed, cutting eligibility for disability could result in more disabled workers claiming retirement benefits early, actuarial experts note, which would only increase pressure on the retirement system. Meanwhile, the money in the disability fund, which is projected to remain solvent through at least the end of this century, would just sit there, unused.

It is one thing, as a blue state voter, to know that your taxes are being spent elsewhere in the country. But it is quite another to worry that they will simply disappear into a sinkhole of corruption, such as that which is now being created in the White House. It is one thing to believe that federal taxes are worthwhile because they are being spent to redress inequalities in health care or education. It is another to watch the federal government spread disease and ignorance. It is one thing to pay taxes every year, in the knowledge that eventually the power in the White House will change every four or eight. It is another to be confronted with a president who talks about third terms. It is one thing to believe that the Constitution will ultimately preserve the country. It is another to recognize that those in power scorn it.

According to a 2023 report from the DOJ Office of the Inspector General (OIG), MCC, the detention facility where Epstein was found hanged, had around 150 analog surveillance cameras—but starting on July 29, 2019, a technical error prevented roughly half of them from recording, including most inside the SHU. The system was scheduled for repairs on August 9, the night before Epstein was found dead. But the technician assigned to fix it couldn’t access the necessary equipment because the corrections officer required to escort him was nearing the end of their shift. As a result, only two cameras were operational near the SHU at the time MCC staff found Epstein hanging in his cell: one covering the common area and stairwells near the entrance to the adjacent 10 South Unit, and another monitoring a ninth-floor elevator bay. Neither captured Epstein’s cell door.

But the leopards are going to eat all of the faces and then each other and then there will be a nuclear accident (or whatever) and everyone will still be cheering because Americans didn’t elect a government, they elected a carnival of cruelty and sadism and they still believe this makes them good people, because they have been willingly convinced that being good people means taking care only of your own — but mostly only of yourself. When you’re in it for the show, you keep cheering. It is, after all, a show.

This nation has never been able to carry on with forward progress for any real sustained period of time. It’s all action and reaction, cycles of openness and then an angry slamming of the open door. You can wander through the Smithsonian Museum of American History looking for hints of where it all started, for the historical analogs for this point in our oscillating cycle of glory and blood. We brought the slaves and built the land of freedom; we killed the natives and planted the tree of liberty; we won the war of liberation and fell in love with Jim Crow. On and on and on. It’s a mistake to ever get too comfortable with where America is going. There is always someone somewhere plotting to drag us back into the past. “How did we become Us?” asks the museum’s centerpiece exhibit of social movements. Turns out we haven’t, quite yet. In that exhibit is a black and white news photo of columns of KKK members, holding hands, marching down Pennsylvania Avenue, with the US Capitol behind them. I peered down at the date: 1925. A perfect century ago. The cycle is turning right on time.
