Our Billy is exploring Winchester and found these 3 bryophytes growing on a ginkgo tree near Winchester Cathedral with another 11 species also on the trunk! @bsbibotany.bsky.social @bbsbryology.bsky.social

A Ginkgo tree trunk with brick and flint/stone walls behind it and red roof tiles. The roofs are green with vegetation. The tree trunk is where the bryophytes were found growing Microcoleopsis minutissima, a tiny green bryotphyte. Marsh Mallow near Fawley and Long-stalked Crane's-bill on chalk grassland near Andover over the summer #WildflowerHour

Long-stalked Crane's-bill, a pale pink flower with a long stem. Marsh Mallow - close up of the flower. It had white petals. More Marsh Mallow. There are some stems of Reeds in amongst the patch of Marsh Mallow Habitat shot for the Marsh Mallow. It is mostly shingle with a little sand near the water. The sea is flat and partly out. Some of the shingle and intertidal area is vegetated. On the opposite side of the water is Southampton with some tall buildings visible, as well as a wooded area.

Our Billy found Bartramia pomiformis - a rare and declining bryophyte in Hampshire while surveying a sunken lane in the South Downs near Liss! #HantsPlants @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Sunken lane in Hampshire, UK. The road is narrow - perhaps single track - with tall steep verges that are covered in vegetation and trees. On the edge of the road is a clipboard with white paper and a dark coloured rucksack. The trees and shrubs are fully leaved so it is shaded Bartramia pomiformis, a bryophyte, on sandy soil with exposed soil around ti. It is green and looks a bit like a mini conifer.

While walking between the office and St Catherine's Hill last week, our field ecologists Billy and Joel pointed out some of Winchester's pavement plants. This included Fern-grass and Water Bent @bsbibotany.bsky.social #HantsPlants
4 ecologists with rucksacks kneeling on a pavement to look at and photograph two species of plant - Water Bent and Fern-grass. Both are species of grass. The road and pavement are made of bricks, and there are stairs leading up to flats nearby.

Last week we had an interesting afternoon at St Catherine's Hill SSSI and were joined by @ralphsian.bsky.social! Species noted included Bastard Toadflax, Autumn Gentian, Clustered Bellflower and Red Bartsia #WildflowerHour @bsbibotany.bsky.social
