References shouldn’t just validate facts. They should present side quests, deeper paths of experience which further enmesh the reader in the subject. These are examples from a privately published piece of narrative non-fiction called SUNG: a ghost story.

To pick this spot
To stop,
Uncurl from the seat
And survey
The browning grass
Rippling to the far horizon.
Why here?
A second life
A final stop
A hunters shack,
Readymade,
Ground down by sky
A shell through which the wind
Can laugh.
No protection.
Everything is grass.
This’ll do.

Films can be powerful touchstones in our lives, and this film certainly is for me. It would probably be a good exercise writing up my relationship to this movie. I’ll share it here when I’ve finished it 😊

I was from a good home in a nondescript suburb. Travis’s escape into, and eventual return from, a ‘deep vast country where nobody knew him - a place without language, or streets’, resonated with me deeply. Seeing this on the big screen on Sunday provoked strong feelings. I was a puddle by the end.

I’ve come back to this film many times in my life, but, during 1987, I watched that film obsessively. Despite the subject matter I found it deeply calming and uplifting, and the ending euphoric. The brilliant soundtrack by Ry Cooder was also a favourite for the same reason #filmscores #blues

When I was 16 I had three favourite films, which I’d recorded off the TV on VHS cassettes. The films were On The Waterfront, Apocalypse Now and Paris Texas - which was my favourite. This weekend, after 40 years, I finally got to see it on the big screen #movies #cinema

Thank you! John Milton is such a rich and worthy topic of study - Blake obviously thought so :)

I think Sebastian Murphy of The Viagra Boys may also have a Blake tattoo, like myself. LOS is the name of Blake’s eternal artist, transformed with divinity as he labours to reveal the dormant Fourfold realities that surround us.
