the -N at the end of originally-dative "München" seems redundant without the original preposition & article, and yet...

so it goes
Etymology Munich was a tiny 12th-century monastic settlement, which was named zu den Munchen ("to the monks"). The Old High German Muncheserved as the base for the modern German city name München.

the origin is one thing but its widespread use & normalization may be because of analogy...
