The debate is forbidden as soon as they think the hate has won and they can put all the massive flaws in their transphobic hate beyond criticism:

Personally, I do believe in the goodness of Pope Francis as a person - doctrinally inseparable from the secular institution and the divine will it represents, sure, but I'm not wedded to the Catholic doctrine. May his soul rest in peace.

Pope Francis as an institution faithfully represented the dynamic and adaptive conservatism which has been the Vatican's policy for quite a while. Whether that policy works, or even makes sense, is surely up for debate.
