I’m all in favour of tech tools that can support research, but I kind of feel on this one… what if we want to be left behind?

Just received an email from my Faculty that was essentially, 'Note to students: you are welcome to come to the Faculty for very short official amounts of time, but it is NOT FOR YOU'. Loving our new £185m building...

What are we even doing here. Why is this a priority, at this time? ‘The force said 488 arrests were for supporting a proscribed organisation.’ Even if it were a terrorist organisation, how is peacefully holding a sign in support against the law?

Just saw the best comedy show ever in a tiny theatre WIP: James Acaster as Craig Simons as James Acaster. Hilarious, dark, and very clever.

#historians I have a set of daily diaries, c.1897-1951, starting in Brighton, England, but most from Vancouver. They are terse, but for anyone studying weather in the early 20C, they might be helpful. Also another set, almost the same, but from India during WWII- weather and sports on base.

Carlo Ginzburg captivated the overflow crowd yesterday as he described coming across Menocchio in the archive. A brilliant historian, one of the greatest influences on my field. Such an honour to meet him and hear him speak.

So happy to honour Regius Prof Lyndal Roper today, with the hammering of our theses to a door in her honour. A brilliant scholar, and a warm, inspiring, and enthusiastic mentor.

This show is funny, crude, and very moving. I watched the final episode a few nights ago, and it’s stuck with me, hauntingly, for days. An absolute masterwork of writing by @jackrooke.bsky.social, and acting by all, but especially Jon Pointing. Took me back to a rough time in my life. I made it.

So many reasons to visit Canada this summer: the usual (beautiful scenery, nice people, cleaner cities, less chance of mass shooting events) now with cheaper consumer goods and less chance of being punished for your “free speech”.

5 weeks ago the CBC poll tracker had the conservatives with an 89% chance of winning a majority in Canada. Now it’s 2%. Absolutely incredible.

It has been a while since I have let myself do broad reading on my thesis topic, since the chapters I'm writing are the nitty-gritty. It is nice to be back in the Big Picture again.
