I also find it deeply troubling (see also, depressing, horrifying, etc) but am additionally curious about whether this constitutes a lie in the way we would typically use the term, and also curious about how we have this type of affective response to an LLM.

I'm interested to read this. My teenager's school rang me to say he had typed a word on his laptop that triggered safeguarding concerns. Slight panic set in, I asked what the word was. 'Suicide' - no context. 2 anxious hrs later they called back to say he had been in a PHSE lesson entitled Suicide.
