One hundred percent! There are a lot of factors that go into UX and accessibility work, and also some really interesting folks who also think about beauty in accessibility work that’s super cool!

On button: talking to users on just that one project showed it all matters.

Recognize something like “lil” as a word and instead may spell it out. So it’s definitely a challenge of trying to capture an aesthetic with plain language.

I think something else that might come into play here is thinking about will your audience understand abbreviations. I follow a great accessibility account on the other place (A11yAwareness), and they’ve made the point that abbreviations may not be known by everyone and that screenreaders may not ..

But I feel like maybe part of what you want to convey based on your question is the aesthetics like cuteness and the feeling from those drawings. So maybe I’d look at alt text in this case like a creative writing exercise? Like in 1-2 sentences how would you paint the same picture with words?

You can definitely search “writing good alt text” and get great advice about considering the context to help figure out what you want to convey, avoiding starting alt text with “Picture/Image of” (although sometimes describing the kind of image is important), and other tips.

Firstly, you’re totally right that good alt text is hard! And figuring the balance of conciseness with capturing the information or feeling of what is being described is something I talk with folks about a lot.
