I make the argument via a reading of Jumana Manna's documentary Foragers, which focuses on struggles over food and in turn, land, in the West Bank. If you haven't seen this wonderful film, I would urge you to! I know how much affection people have for it and hope the article does it justice.

The idea of doing 'research in complete freedom' and of 'common issues' both miss the fundamental problem of the power imbalance in any collaboration. The former is presumably a version of the scientific neutrality claim. Both of these are commonly mobilised to justify violating boycotts.

A significant % of Environmental Humanities is a rerun of 1990s ecocriticism, in which we have to hear people talk again and again about the importance of connecting to nature and your bioregion, with nobody wanting to listen to the literary critic in the room pointing out why we stopped doing this
