I admittedly skipped July because life is 🤪 right now so I present two pies for August.

A peach pie with my BEST crust to date and a blueberry pie that, despite my forgetting the egg wash and skipping a few baking steps, was by far more popular. Proving looks are not everything!

June: strawberry rhubarb pie, my husband’s favorite 🍓

Crust: it’s getting much better!
Taste: got rave reviews, and I have to say that I agreed

This New Year’s resolution is indeed making me a better baker!

May: 2 pies! cherry with my best crust so far and a PB choc. pie.

I was SO proud of my cherry pie, made with fresh cherries I bought from a Central Valley farm stand (forget exactly where).

I'm not a huge PB fan, but I made it for my grandpa, who said it was great.

Getting better every month!

April: made my life easier with a graham cracker crust but more challenging trying to meet the demands by my niece for a "rainbow pie."

Outcome: a key lime pie with rainbow "colors" aka fruit juices

Crust? easier than normal!
Filling? tart, fresh, very springy!
Color? idk, a 3yo designed it!

March: still working on my crust, but navigating into more skilled waters.

Crust? Still ugly, but getting better!
Filling? Curd was fab!
Color? Fun!! More cranberries next time for a deeper red
Taste? A little too sweet, but it's pretty!!

A CA lawmaker proposed a bill to start a limited "single-cell" pilot program across a handful of state prisons that would effectively give people more space.

I've seen a lot of cramped cells, but nowhere has the crowding been more severe than at San Quentin, where 2 men often share tiny quarters.

February: Making the most of my NYT Cooking subscription again with a striped berry pie.

Crust? Set the fire alarm off burning it
Filling? Lumpy and, somehow, dry?
Color? Somewhat similar to what it should look like
Taste? still pretty damn good

January: a seemingly simple, very verdant matcha pie recipe from NYT Cooking.

Crust? Overbaked.
Custard? Burnt.
Color? Supposed to be a rich green, but brown because...burnt.
Taste? Still pretty damn good.

Also, on this story: Trump is doing everything he promised on the campaign, and Dems seem to be flailing in their response to actions they had months to prepare for/strategize against. It's remarkable.

This graph about Walz is so telling (though, he had his chance)

I know this story is on a different topic, but I'm confused. Are they trying to ban TikTok or not?

Daniel Lurie is spending his final hours as mayor-elect of San Francisco serving coffee to the homeless and walking through the Tenderloin, stopping often to talk with people about the city’s problems.

Every year, I bake a huge pile of holiday cookies to hand out in large batches to family and friends. Very proud of this year's collection!

Most of the cookies are Italian(ish) recipes. But I like to throw in a couple of random newbies every year to audition for a permanent spot in the rotation.

Resuming frequent posting of California being California, where my photos won’t be drowned out by trolls and bots.

Starting with a recent trip to Jenner, CA, where the mouth of the Russian River spills out into the Pacific:
