"Get a bus from [Dublin] airport to Galway, say, and spend the journey looking out the window, you’re struck not by how green this famously green country is, but how utterly barren it has become."

Good @irishexaminer.bsky.social piece by Colin Sheridan.

Colin Sheridan: We need a national tree strategy
European countries boast an average 35% forest cover yet Ireland stands at a disgraceful 11%; much of our country is as barren as the Sierra Nevada

I’m assisting Trees for Life with the Wild Pine Project to locate unrecorded remnants of Scotland’s Caledonian Pine Forests.

In Gleann Fionnlighe nr Fort William we cored several old trees. My analysis shows the oldest originate in early 1600s so very probably wild, not planted.

Glad to talk on Rosslare Fort today in Belfast at the Irish Post Medieval Archaeology Group conference. It is the 100th anniversary of the abandonment of Rosslare Fort in Wexford this year after the storm on Christmas Eve 1924 turned it into an island #CHERISHlegacy @discoveryprogramme.bsky.social

Happy St Brigid’s Day!
The cult of St Brigid travelled beyond Ireland, including to Wales. In the CHERISH project we collaborated with colleagues in Wales researching sites at risk from climate change, including the lime kiln at St Brides Haven #CHERISHlegacy #RCAHMW @aberuni.bsky.social
