25 years ago today, New Year’s Eve 1999, the week-long hijacking of an Indian Airlines passenger jet ended in Kandahar after India released 3 jailed terrorists in exchange for the passengers. Here are a few photos I took at Kandahar airport as I was covering the story for Time magazine.

The great Pakistani-born writer Bapsi Sidhwa died on Wednesday. I only met her once, years after we’d corresponded as Time magazine was commissioning her to write this essay in 1997, but she greeted me as if I were a long-lost friend.

Seeing sad news of the death of Sher Ali Khan, who, with his brother Mehr Ali, formed one of Pakistan’s greatest qawwali groups. They performed at my home in Islamabad in 2002, and I recall some of my neighbors settling in on their terraces to enjoy this special performance that evening as well.
