Maybe in the US among upmarket users, but much of the world had long abandoned SMS by then. iMessage rolled out in late 2011; by then, GroupMe was sending 500M messages/mo and WhatsApp was knocking on the door of 100M monthly users

100%. I’m sure there’s a German word for the feeling an employee has when their co is destroying/abandoning/consuming something societally precious, but it Must Be Done to feed the investors or meet KPIs or beat competitors. The ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that tells me they feel bad, but that they’d do it again

…which is, in practice, what Perplexity does. It also preserves provenance with a footnote for each/every other sentence. In my eyes, it’s more a *symptom* of the internet’s downward spiral — specifically, the SEO hellscape around any major search engine — more than a contributor (at least atm)

We already see examples of those consequences in ignored 911 callbacks. The internet generation has abandoned the platform (and in this case, the platform is basically the entire medium) because it isn’t trustworthy or valuable anymore.
