Influencer is totally a grey area for class, but I felt like Zarina was generally portrayed as being of some means. It is backgrounded though! But I think it's a meaningful distinction in real life that can be applied to the show.

Thanks for your response! I don't fundamentally disagree except insofar I think there is class distinction between Zarina as an influencer with some apparent pull and Ayesha as a gig economy worker.

One last thought: I thought that your essay is in indirect dialogue with JGP's article last year "Reject Transgender Liberalism" abt how gender theory has been arguably co-opted by political transphobes to justify anti-trans legislative action (I do not like that article to be blunt, lol).

In any case, I do generally agree with doing away with cultural relativism in epistemology to some extent, but anthropology has whole courses about this issue for a reason. It is quite complicated! I enjoyed your essay in any case, thank you for sharing it.

I agree that centering the white gaze is an issue that occurs in the West among brown women, and I would say that that is the issue that We Are Lady Parts was trying to capture. I think it did so well! It is unfortunate that tokenization leads to that issue making the queer love story fraught. :(

Her crime is her desire to speak on the experiences of all brown queer women living in the West. This is a natural tendency that occurs in queer brown spaces, virtual and real. Easy to relate as an issue, given that we are brown trans women, often spoken over ourselves lol.

To some degree "Westernization" (problematic term I think for me to use in this context but I am not a scholar) of queer brown women is a thing that happens, and performing for the public eye is a thing that happens. It is unfortunate but real.

As for We Are Lady Parts, I actually enjoyed the queer subplot. I think there is a class issue being discussed beyond the queer issue. Zarina is an influencer. For various reasons, I personally distrust queer influencers (I recognize this is a fraught statement), so I enjoyed the portrayal.

I enjoyed the discussion of the term "honor killing." It is a common term in the GBV space used by South Asian women themselves for a reason - in my direct professional experience, it is not actually controversial among those who work in that field.
