A couple of one-day builds to get ready for the work Halloween event. I'm mostly assembling a closet costume, but I couldn't possibly not add a bit of flair. This is not a pipe. This is a pipe-shaped object.

Thanks to @gravesandgenealogy.bsky.social for these beautiful shots of the custom cloak clasps ready to ship out.

These were a commission for a fellow cosplayer that we designed together. I etched the designs into steel, dished them using3D printed dies, and riveted-on the fittings.

I'm doing a small commission for some custom LOTR-inspired cloak clasps. I wasn't sure if my 3D printed dies would be able to dish the steel this much, but it was no problem at all. I'm so happy with how they're coming out!

This past week I should have been working on my costume for Chicago TARDIS, but instead I played with metal. Among other things, I molded and cast a piece of Rohan hardware that I have been dreaming about for a decade. Then I copper plated it, and finally brass plated it.

I'm calling this model done. The differences I see between mine and the reference are acceptable to me within the tolerances of what I'd attribute to casting flaws, wear and tear, and/or things I don't actually care to replicate.

I had a chance to get some modeling done this weekend. For whatever reason, things are clicking for me in Blender a lot more this time. On this piece of hardware in particular, the original has a lot of wear so I am having to make some decisions about how much I want to try to replicate.

The Aragorn coronation vambraces are complete and polished! I learned so much from this build, and I can't wait to make another pair or a related piece again someday.

I recently had to start a buckle project over when the person I'm making them for noticed he had sent me the wrong model. I thought the melting buckles would look cool, so I decided to film the whole process.

With a recent successful shipment to Australia, my creations have now ended up in at least eight different countries representing three continents. I just think that's cool.

(I did have a shipment waylaid in El Salvador for a while on the way to the UK, but I don't think I can count that.)

I knew having a garden was going to be enjoyable for us, but I never considered how exciting it was for the vegetables.

The kick worked. Just a few more nights of work and the set will be complete.

Working on something for myself. Figuring out basic shape and scale, and trying to decide if I want to try to 3D-model this, or sculpt with clay on this 3D printed base. I've tried a couple of times to model this in Blender, only to give up.
I will eventually mold and cast in metal either way.

I made some pewter tiles for a Kili (from The Hobbit) cosplayer. These will go on the collar of his coat. I has originally planned to make these by pressing metal between 3D printed forms, but they are so small that the detail is too fine to come through with that method.

I have been playing with a zinc alloy called Zamak. Stronger than pewter, and while it melts at a higher temp, it's achievable w/o a special furnace. I tried a Thermacast resin mold, but it's new to me and I got bad results. Great results with silicone, but it's not rated to withstand the temps.

End-of-month fitness check-in. I was healthy all month, but my training was a tad erratic due to travel. Still got most of my planned mileage done. The heat was continues to be bad, so not bringing the dog along. I am seeing and feeling marked improvements in my speed and endurance.

My wife's family's old farmhouse contains a ton of cool vintage items, including this vacuformed plastic bar sign. The only problem is that the small hand is fixed in place at 12, and the big hand can be moved freely. So... the bar never opens?

I always hate having to be the 70th or 421st "like" or "follow". That said, I resumed posting on TikTok after a long hiatus, and I wouldn't mind if you were the 421st.

The finished vambrace. It a tad loose on my arm, but other than that I'm thrilled with how it came out.

I love looking through reference photos again when I'm almost finished with a replica, and find some tiny detail I didn't notice before, but can still add to mine. Like this little diamond/star shape that's stamped into the leather tab at the bottom of these vambraces.

This weekend I dyed and assembled the leather portion of one of the bracers. All that's left on this is to rivet the plates in place. I originally thought I might attach them to one layer, and hide the bottoms of the rivets with the other, but I think that would have been more work than it's worth.
April 21, 2025 at 2:03 PM
I'm getting a little hung up trying to determine order of operations for assembly. I'd like to rivet the plates to the top layer, then hide the rivets with the bottom layer. There's also a layer of trim that goes around the perimeter between these, and I'm struggling with how to stitch it all.
April 17, 2025 at 3:23 PM
I am completely building one bracer before I make any pieces for the other side, just in case I discover some flaw in my design or process along the way. This is where that first one stands after this weekend. I was hoping to get into leather work by now, but I didn't make it.

I took a shot at replicating the Gondorian buckles from Boromir's bracers that Aragorn later acquires. These are steel.

Putting my freshly organized workspace to good use on this #wipwednesday. Each steel plate, after pressing the embossed design, gets engraved, brass trim applied, and polished. Soon they will be riveted to leather to form the vambrace.
