Presidents’ Day began as a way to honor the birthday of George Washington. Over time, it grew to recognize both Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

One led a young nation through its birth. The other held it together through its rebirth.

Principles are the load-bearing beams of public service. Privileges come with the job title and access, but they’re never the point.

No matter what we are working on, the question is the same: what do we protect when it costs us something? And who benefits when we do?

As the Super Bowl approaches and we observe Black History Month, I want to highlight Kenny Washington and why his story still matters.

I was struck by the fact that the National Football League wasn’t always segregated.

Black History Month matters. There’s an ongoing debate about whether we still need moments like this. I believe we do and that it’s our responsibility to ensure they endure.

History shapes how we understand who belongs in the story of our progress.

Dr. King reminded us that progress isn’t automatic. It doesn’t arrive on a schedule or move forward just because time passes.

Change comes from people willing to stay engaged when the work is slow, uncomfortable, or unseen.

2025 was a pretty demanding year. I’m deeply grateful for the people in my life who provide perspective, support, and encouragement. They are the reason I can stay rooted in purpose.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and meaningful holiday season. I hope you find time with the people who matter most.

On December 15, 1791, the first ten amendments were ratified.

The principles laid down that day are a compass. Whether we’re talking about affordable housing, higher education access, infrastructure, or anything in between, their protections for every individual must be met.

The Uncorking Leadership event was a valuable opportunity to talk candidly with other CEOs about the pressures we’re all facing. Clear themes were workforce, policy shifts, and the pace of decision-making. Appreciate Purple Infinity creating the space.

Policy is one thing. Personalities are another. In federal spaces, you have to read the room fast and adjust. Build on insight, channel passion, and stay steady when bias shows up.

Thanksgiving has always been a sacred pause in my year and an opportunity to step back from the pace of life and get rooted again in faith, family, and gratitude.

The holidays bring quiet pressure to do more and give more. But the truth is, whenever you give your best, you’ve given enough.

No one can do it all, so make time for what fills you back up. That’s what sustains real service and leadership.

Good intentions have never cast a ballot.

Make a plan today.
Take a few minutes to confirm when, where, and how you’ll vote. Then call a friend, neighbor, or family member and make a plan to go together.

Democracy is stronger when we show up together.
A voteless people is a hopeless people.

One of the best parts of the CBCF Annual Legislative Conference is the people. Leaders from every sector came together to strengthen communities through connection and collaboration. Progress takes shared vision and partnership, and we can only do it together.

At CBCF’s #ALC54, one of my favorite moments came from the Sounds of the Future installation by UMG.

Standing among classic soul and hip-hop albums from my own collection was a reminder that music drives culture. The sounds of the past still power our progress. #Culture #Community

Honored to attend the 54th Annual Legislative Conference hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in D.C. Grateful to the CBCF for creating space to tackle the issues shaping our future—and to the leaders, colleagues, and Alpha Phi Alpha brothers who continue to push the work forward.

When Congress doesn’t pass a funding bill, the authority for federal agencies to spend money runs out.
That pause affects employees, programs, and the communities that rely on them.

Our ancestors fought for this right. It’s on us to honor that legacy:

Recently, I joined my Alpha brothers at the Dulles Plane Pull, where we pulled a FedEx cargo plane to support Special Olympics Virginia. 💪 Every pull was fueled by service and by athletes whose courage and joy inspire us daily.

Earlier this month, I joined the NAACP Loudoun Branch Candidates Forum. It was a true demonstration of democracy in action. Thoughtful questions, accountability, and real community dialogue remind us why local civic engagement matters.

We pay attention every four years, but the elections that impact us most often get ignored. School boards, city councils, and county supervisors decide the future of our communities.

Don’t sleep on your local ballot.

When pay is fair, families are stronger, students have more chances, and communities thrive. Pay gaps are a lost potential. Leaders in every sector can choose to value work with fairness.

Equal pay strengthens paychecks and strengthens futures.

Democracy only works when we show up. On the International Day of Democracy, let's remember that it’s a privilege to vote. Honor it. Get informed. Don’t let someone else decide for you.

Give a damn and vote.

On Patriot Day, we remember the lives lost and honor the first responders who served with courage and bravery.
It’s also a reminder that our work in public service must strengthen safety, trust, and community.

Launching a new series: Voting 101.
Too often, people are convinced to vote against their own interests. Party labels and personalities may grab attention, but it is policies that shape our lives.

Vote with clarity and your conscience, for what improves you and your community.

Grateful to join MOBC’s 2nd Annual Back-to-School Festival in Centreville, VA. Thousands of backpacks, free haircuts and health screenings, and real resources for scholarships and voter education. Proud Hamm Consulting could support. Community works when we serve together.
