My breath puffed against the mask. Trapped heat made tendrils of my hair stick to my face, and I itched to swipe at them. The rough fabric rubbed against my nose, a reassurance that my identity was hidden, and I rolled my shoulders to stretch out the tightness of my limbs.

The Princess Thief My breath puffed against the mask. Trapped heat made tendrils of my hair stick to my face, and I itched to swipe at them. The rough fabric rubbed against my nose, a reassurance that my identity was hidden, and I rolled my shoulders to stretch out the tightness of my limbs. I closed my eyes and searched for other minds in the house. An older man's thoughts entered my head. His mind was peppered and sporadic, laden down with a heaviness that told me he was fully asleep. He pictured himself rolling around in a pool filled with shiny gold coins as he grabbed handfuls to throw them in the air. I inwardly chuckled at the imagery of such a thing. What type of cushy life did he lead that this was his dream? Someone else’s thoughts entered my mind. A sentry focused on checking the grounds outside, keeping his eyes peeled for any sudden movements that indicated danger. He thought about the knife at his belt, fingering it to feel more confident that he’d be able to handle anything that came his way. But the guard had never met me before, and he was lucky he was walking around the exterior of the house. I didn’t sense anyone else and deftly moved forward, entering the dark abode. Small slivers of light strained through the curtains that had been closed over all the windows of a sitting room. Squinting, I had just enough illumination to weave around the large ornate furniture that dotted the expanse. My fingers ran across the buttery soft fabric of a chaise lounge. The material had no stains, as if this piece was chosen as more of a decoration. Nothing at all like the beaten down chairs back in my shanty, barely fitting inside the small room I called home. My stomach soured at such usage of money wasted. I circled around and picked up a pillow, noting its intricate stitching. Even the smells of the house were luxurious — with hints of dried flowers and spices tickling my nose. I snorted, and tossed the useless item aside.

Personally, I prefer the hero with a tragic past. How about you?

Protagonists vs Heros. Who is at the center of your novel, a protagonist or a hero? I hope it is the later. Every protagonist can be a hero, even from the opening pages. Indeed that quality is essential if we are to tag along with your main character for hundreds of pages or more.
