#pleinair week update: it has rained every day and I am aiming to be the queen of atmosphere.

Yesterday's painting was at the #oakland estuary, formerly a major shipping lane and now full of sunken boats. I painted what I think is a #shipwreck

After doing initial setup of the Garden Gallery, I'm 100% convinced that the new decor trend should be walls of plants and paintings.

My mentor has me applying color schemes from other paintings to a single reference image in order to understand how color supports story telling. I present to you: Surfer Sith Geralt, Gothic Romance Geralt, and Alien Cult Leader Geralt. #geralt #witcher #practice

Pros of making my own paint: I like my Prussian Blue better than Utrecht’s
Cons: it gets *everywhere*

My mentor has me studying color by painting in ONLY the MOST saturated hues. I finally cracked it today so here's a little diagram about my strategy

2024 Art Train 🚂 ✨✨

quote this with what art you’re proudest of this year !

💚

Lemme tell you about this piece I did about my relationship between me and my art practice. We're finally helping each other out and it feels real good.

Seems like it’s probably worth exploring, but also I’m sure there’s a reason the pastel people use pan pastels instead of what I’m doing here. ::shrug:: try it and see?

Not for nothing but I SWORE I’d never do #artnouveau or any style this shape heavy. I’m going to sit at this Mexican bar with my Mexican hot chocolate and my sketchbook and mutter about building character and I’m going to draw these marigolds if it kills me.

I don't just -- or even mostly -- do botany. I also reinterpret Greek myths in a modern way. To me, Pygmalion is about a person being so invested in a project that the project's success or failure determines the creator's worth as a person.

What are the hashtags for botanical-inspired but most definitely fantasy art? I need them.

Anyway, here's a sketch I did of a fungus newt after I walked into my studio one day to find a puddle of water on the floor, an uninvited amphibious resident, and cup fungus growing out of my wall. 😤

I'm not a botanical illustrator but I am developing dark theories about all the invasive species in my front yard. And doing paintings of them.
