A paid tier that gave everyone what they wanted in bonus features at an acceptable price point will not be enough to keep Bluesky afloat. This won’t last, this can’t last, and when it is over everyone will just hop over to the next thing, yearning for the days of peak Twitter/early Bluesky.

Twitter, before the brands and the scammers trying to make their brands got their hooks into it, was bleeding money. Bluesky is too, and will continue to. When the brands come, people will leave. Slowly, then suddenly, just like they left Twitter.

Bluesky is, immediately, magnitudes better than late stage Twitter, clearly the victor in the race to fill the void. That's great because if it’s just toxic social media from here on out, we’re screwed. But it, like Twitter, also can't last, for the same reasons why the peak Twitter era ended: $.

Bluesky doesn’t feel quite right. I doubt it ever will. You can never fully recapture the past because no matter how close to it you come, you can never avoid the nostalgia that wasn’t there. There can't be nostalgia during the peak. We don’t and can’t always realize we are in the salad days.

Quit Twitter a year ago and haven't missed it. I signed up for this mostly to park a username for if I wanted it for later. So far Bluesky feels like peak Twitter. But a knock-off version. It looks the same, almost exactly the same, both in UX and in the content. That’s both a feature and a bug.
