From In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson…William E. Dodd, US ambassador to Germany, gave a speech to the Berlin branch of the American Chamber of Commerce on 10/12/1933. In the speech, he referenced several historical examples of the collapse of governments under despotic leadership.
Image reads: After a few more allusions, he came to his ending. ”In conclusion,” he said, ”one may safely say that it would be no sin if statesmen learned enough of history to realize that no system which implies control of society by privilege seekers has ended in any other way than collapse.” To fail to learn from such ”blunders of the past,” he said, was to end up on a course toward ”another war and chaos.”

From Thursday Next: A First Among Sequels by Jasper Fforde. Even though this book was published in 2007, it seems fitting for today.
Page 1 of the book Thursday Next: A First Among Sequels.
