Army records show that Master Sgt. Matthew Livelsberger had five Bronze Stars, including one with valor device which is awarded for valor in combat. He also received an Army Commendation Medal with Valor and multiple other achievement, commendation, and good conduct awards.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the man suspected of killing now at least 15 people in New Orleans, served on active duty and in the Army Reserve from 2007 to 2020 as an HR and IT specialist. He deployed once to Afghanistan in 2009, according to his record. Left service as a staff sergeant.

Pentagon spox MG Pat Ryder says today that the number of US troops in Syria is actually around 2,000 — more than double the number of troops that has been disclosed. They've been there since before the fall of the Assad regime, he said; he learned the number just today.

In 2019, I covered a government shutdown through the eyes of Coast Guard families, whose paychecks were withheld.

One woman I interviewed for that story cried while speaking to me. Another said she had cried repeatedly.
