who got his PhD with Bill Bialek, who I think of as the "Ising model guy" though he's more than that. very cool guy

the neuro Ising models I'm more familiar with are the retinal coding ones like this classic paper www.nature.com/articles/nat... or an extension journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol... which fun fact one of the authors is Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic
Weak pairwise correlations imply strongly correlated network states in a neural population - Nature
Collective behaviour in neurons in the vertebrate retina is described quantitatively by models that capture the observed pairwise correlations, but assume no higher order interactions.

gradient descent works better in SF cause of all the hills. I guess that suggests a chinese AI lab in chongqing might be able to compete...

tho it's not specific to feedback really so not a fully general drop-in for cybernetics

I think "tektology" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tektology) which foreshadowed at least the crankier aspects of cybernetics is a somewhat cooler name. courtesy of the goat Alexander Bogdanov. from Greek 'tekton' meaning 'craftsman' or 'builder' so science of structure more or less

what is there to remember about HTMLGiant? does it have some kind of legacy? my mother was a contributor but all I really remember is hearing about "boobs friday" as a kid. I'm curious about what it means to others

I'm not sure "go up some stairs" is that hard anymore though afaict robotics has gone far in the last few years. I think they solve that shit with reinforcement learning and that's how you get all the crazy ass unitree videos, which are diverse enough I think there's some real solution there

don't need a brain to walk on a flat surface, you can take the brain out of the cat and it runs just fine. they don't do this anymore naturally. I swear I've heard of them stepping over obstacles too but can't find that right now

I would guess many people would find the current state of caregiving work fairly repugnant and are comparing AI to how it should be, not how it is. hard to poll "value over replacement" instead of "value" probably. no comment on the spiritual part...

note that this is distinct from a p-zombie because even a p-zombie claims they're just like you and me

the rhetorically winning move is to go "well okay then maybe you're not conscious but the rest of us are" and treat them as a machine but it wouldn't be good to do that. it would be kinda cool if they're right about themselves though, if some people really just don't have subjective experience

"guy who doesn't believe in qualia" is surprisingly common, seems like at least one shows up every time it's discussed. I've seen them respond to a pretty clear explanation of what is meant and still denying they have anything like it

likewise the allen institute for brain science. I have a lot of respect for paul allen for founding some pretty great institutions. it's really a shame what patrick bateman did to him
