This is a good reminder that free data provided through private actors can be rescinded at any time if the economic winds shift.

Sometimes during the manual validation process for classified maps, I come across interesting artifacts in Google Earth. Today, it was an airplane flying over southern Sweden in spring 2021.

Our paper on dust storms and land-use in Mesopotamia has been accepted in Environmental Research Letters 🙌🥳. It's the result of a nice collaboration with Hossein Hashemi, Amir Naghibi, and others. More information about the paper will be forthcoming.

A nice gift to start the holidays is the first citation to our Landscape Ecology paper on migratory birds in Tunisia, which outlined recommendations for their conservation. Want to know more but don't have time to read the entire paper? Then, check out this summary:

Hi Marco! I wrote the original summary back in 2022, but it was written in a hurry to quickly get the word out about the paper. This summer I used an LLM on the original text to add some clarity to it. So, the web tool grossly overestimated the amount of AI material in the text 🙂

One of the more impressive #raptors we have in southern Sweden - a young White-tailed Eagle makes a flock of Barnacle Geese uncomfortable.

Mapping of tree species in Sweden is gaining traction with the initial classification looking good. But as is obvious from the transition map, there are errors. Work will now focus on rectifying them and mapping the remainder of the species that are in the "Other Species" category. #remotesensing

Did you know that we used #Malmö as a case study in a recent satellite #remotesensing study? We used explainable #machinelearning to unravel the contribution of #Sentinel2 data in mapping the city. The research is open access and can be found here: doi.org/10.1016/j.rs...

Fieldwork season in the forests of southern Sweden is off to a good start. We've collected transect data at 5 of the 50 sampling points in my study area. The data collected will be used in different experiments, including as validation for remote sensing based tree species maps.

These spring (northbound) and autumn (southbound) migration routes of a single adult female Honey Buzzard between breeding sites in Finland and wintering sites in South Africa are nothing short of remarkable. The routes altogether cover a period of six years. Photo: M. H. Herrero (ML480562911).

A Rosemary #Beetle (Chrysolina americana) that I photographed in our shared garden. Very much looking forward to spring / summer and the return of the insects 🙂 #macrophotography

Some photos of insects and arthropods from the shared garden of our housing association: European Harvestman, Common Greenbottle Fly, Garden Spider, Seven-Spotted Ladybug. I may have misidentified some of them, so please feel free to suggest a correction.

The intricate beauty of a Rook feather. Under the right conditions, the feathers of corvids can be remarkably colorful.
