Also - and here I am curious, maybe someone else knows - Ryu was the second son so wouldn’t the first born be the one to take on the family business of running the temple? I wonder why he was expected to take on that role at all? I’d love to learn the backstory to that.

Just to add a couple of points (for readers who may not be aware). It is common in Japan for Buddhist monks to marry and have a family. Which Chishu Ryu did, and apparently quite happily.

1. Hibiscus are a late summer flower, evoking the discomfort of sweltering heat.

2. ⁠By 1898 Shiki was bedridden with TB (he would die in 1902). He loved playing go but one can imagine that he couldn’t always play although he did have a board he would keep to play with friends or by himself.

Kūkai, founder of the Shingon sect, went to China in 804 CE. According to legend, before returning he threw a vajra towards Japan. It flew across the sea and landed in Cape Ashizuri where he later retrieved it, marking the spot as sacred whence the founding of Kongōfukuji.
