The poor souls must find Thailand confusing then. I lived there for a while. Thai friends would often ask me for the name of a herb, vegetable or fruit in English and I'd just shrug my shoulders because I'd never seen said ingredient outside of South East Asia and only know it by its Thai name.

Perth grocers went with kang kong but I much prefer the translation you'll occasionally see in Thailand, swamp cabbage. As to the question what is it? With chili, garlic and fermented soy beans, it's bloody delicious.
