I really thought Graeber & Wengrow's 'The Dawn of Everything' had some really fascinating history in that regard, too

This is great, thanks for writing it!
We recently published a book about AI and capitalism, where we explore a lot of similar issues, might be interesting to you:

True, but also worth asking why this mystification in particular works so well (obviously, language is a starting point, but there's a lot to that question)

Keepass and KeepassXC aren't the same software
But also, isn't trusting the review & test procedures of these developers always at the heart of an open source project? Is the difference a matter of scale? Principles? Vibes?

Imho this is related to the shortcomings of the "hype" frame of AI critique:
"Calling AI hype may be like thinking the fascists are simply stupid [...] But the fascists are confused neither about the nature of free speech, nor the nature of the “speech” that is produced by an LLM."

Deflating “Hype” Won’t Save Us
The problem with AI isn’t hype. The problem is who and what it’s useful for.

Yes, many religions have constraints on using the name of god(s), and I suppose some people take that to include constraints on how to write it. I've gotten the impression that this particular one is mostly used among certain varieties of Judaism, but I wouldn't know anything about the details tbh
