Ever since Tommy could remember, he felt like he should be flying. The skies called to him; he wanted to run his hands through the soft-looking clouds despite knowing it was probably not fluffy and would only feel clammy or wet. Still, he dreams of feeling the wind in his hair, wind ruffling through his clothes and something behind him. Ever since he could remember, he felt like he was missing something. It was something like phantom limb syndrome, where he felt an itch behind him, but not exactly on his back. He always thought it was something to do with his soulmate. Before his mother died, she told him stories of Tommy when he was a baby. One of those stories told him of a man standing above his cradle when he was six months old. To anyone, that was immensely creepy and scary, but his mother told him how the man’s eyes glowed with adoration as he cooed at the young Tommy. She could have sworn the man had chirped. Half-asleep and heavily sleep-deprived, his mother hadn’t thought it was real until she woke the next day. He played peek-a-boo with Tommy whilst his mother drifted in and out of sleep on the chaise by the cradle. Tommy, a baby who was still learning object permanence, found it absolutely hilarious, bursting into giggles, reaching for the man and pouting when he was denied. He got Tommy’s mother’s approval, and the man had picked Tommy up from the cradle and brushed small blonde curls away, marvelling at the baby blue eyes that stared up at him. The stranger gushed to his mother about how adorable the baby was; she was very fortunate to have him. “He was your guardian angel, Thomas. I just know it.” The truth is that Tommy has his doubts about this story. It made more sense that his mother had dreamt this elaborate story up whilst severely sleep-deprived. Why does he think this, exactly? Well, according to her, there were ebony, feathered appendages on his back. The man had wings. This is why she wasn’t worried about a random man being beside his cradle; she genuinely thought that he was Tommy’s guardian angel.
