This is the way. Invest and host public on working tech. Use scrap-PCs for tinkering. Don't PO the friends and family. Make an experimental cluster with the spare parts. It's experimental after all! And now I'm really finally having fun! rather than slaving over making things "work" with what I got.

Almost 90% of my reason to #selfhost things was to share services to friends. #minecraft, #foundryvtt, #blogs, #plex, etc were all on those servers. But, now I found #k8s. #n8n, and AI developer mode with #ollama. Ohhhh man, the automation... the locality!!! Now I'm REALLY #homelabing it!

I went back to 2 full ITX boards with 64GB of ram, 8 core processors, and 2.5Gb networking. Those two boxes both with 12-bay hot-swap drive bays and a 4U rack-mount case, to be my "client-hosted" servers. Where size really does match performance! 😜 Leaving my #minilab with nowhere to go...

It's a chain reaction for sure... It starts with "man I just want a simple home page for links" and ends with "I just bought my 14th server this month because load balancing and backups and because redundancy..." It's a battle.

Well, this is just wrong, but ok. 600mhz only, and that's for TV/wireless communicators. It would actually open up the range for more purposeful use that HAM, GMRS, CB, Marine, etc don't even use.

Congrats! I really gotta get mine too, technician is great for driving around and getting repeaters but HF is a must for a home base

154.190 is usually fire emergency services depending on location.

I also disliked the dependency... And went with WordPress. The thing is, WordPress isn't bad, just don't go crazy with plugins and keep things updated. Ghost will be great soon once they get over the ActivityPub hurdle. but I do wish there was ANYTHING else besides mailgun. Until then, WP it is.

If you care about how many followers you have, keeping the seperated accounts for different niche topics can be good, but otherwise if it's just posting for the fun of it and sharing info, keep your personal account. Post ham on personal account. Whichever makes you happy.

A rack like this I could see being useful for the pi, as making racks for the 10inch was tough. But I like 10inch because it fits the generic mini-pc form factor.

Ghost (I believe) strips it by default, WordPress needs a plugin. It should be the standard but it's not. I don't think static builders do either. Admittedly I need to script mine to strip it as well, I sometimes (a lot) forget to run it through before uploading.

Another warning, make sure the email linked is not your main one. you'll either get tons of spam, or someone will try to utilize the info found about that email and get into your other accounts.

Can always have it link to a Paypal or Patreon or similar. People trust paying on sites that are also trusted rather than paying on a person's personal site, I've learned.

Proud of you for making what you got so far! Looking good!

Meaning, if the CMS has comments already built in. So if static, it would be easiest/safest to do Disqus/Giscus rather than self-host is what I was meaning. I used Hugo and Discus and it works pretty well. In your tech blog, I agree, Giscus would be best for target audience.

I've been searching for YEARS to find the simplest, secure, multi-platform, multi-media, multi-purpose technology that can also protect privacy and can get people communicating with as large of a group as they choose, from 1 specific person to the world. So far Bsky has been meeting 90% of that. 2/4

On the other hand, also depending on CMS, hook it up to ActivityPub. Or simply share it on your platform of choice, and let the discussion happen there. So once again, Yes, but still not self hosted.

Self-Hosting comments is like email... Spam, scams, and bots is management nightmare.

Depends on the CMS. Disqus is pretty simple to set up, and most people have one and don't have to re-sign up for individual sites. Self-hosting just complicates this same idea. But if it's WordPress or built-in comments, you lose interaction by needing sign ups. My vote: Yes & Disqus.

I love foundry because it's probably the most simple install process of any self-hosted app. I got it up and running within minutes and it's been working ever since. Better than roll20 IMHO.

The flipper has a coiled antenna inside; add a screen, buttons, battery, and boards, it gets bulky pretty quick. Laws of physics wouldn't allow the size to be much smaller.

There is an SDR that comes with a phone case to make it smoother and turns the phone into a dual-band Walkie Talkie. Something similar would be to get a Noelec SDR, a U-shaped USB dongle, and a short antenna mounted to the case, but it's not as sleek.

Was never on X in the first place, so no, it's not time. Never was. Nobody needs X, and this desperate attempt to beg people back is just kinda lame. It's time for federation and self hosting and truly abandoning X.

That's why they call it rag chewing! Lot of fibers. Not a lot of substance.
