What's Up Mechadoc, the original anime about car tuning and GT racing. like the later, more famous Wangan Midnight and Initial D, it could get extremely technical; unlike them, it had a strong anti-street racing stance

the otherwise excellent Italian TV dub butchered the technical parts completely
protagonist Jun Kazami drives his signature car: a pink Subaru 360 that he has engine-swapped, replacing the original shitty post-war 2-stroke 2 cylinder engine with a turbocharged Wankel. a large "MD" sticker features on the car's hood: the logo of "MechaDoc", the tuning shop Jun works for the car is pictured head-on, turning slightly sideways in a highway turn. Jun, a stereotypical handsome good guy, is wearing his mechanic's coveralls and a determined look protagonist Jun Kazami drives his latest creation out of the garage: a red 1983 Toyota Celica XX that was rebuilt from a wreck; two "MD" stickers on the hood identify it as a creation of the MechaDoc tuning shop the car is flanked by Jun's two associates at the shop: mechanic Kiyoshi Noro (a large man with a thin neckbeard) and manager Ichiro Nakamura (a young man with eyeglasses and a full head of light brown hair). all three are wearing tan mechanic's coveralls; Ichiro, the more business-minded of the three, wears a shirt and tie under his

Vintage photo of two obsolete shunting locomotives, an FS 207 and an FS 208. They are the shortest locomotives you've ever seen, just barely long enough to fit the driver (standing room only). 0-4-0. They were nicknamed "flounders" owing to their flattened appearance FS 216, just a perfectly OK diesel shunter, somewhat on the smaller side. 0-4-0. painted in the standard Italian shunter livery (green with yellow railings, red bumpers and yellow lines on the grille) FS 215 shunter. it looks ridiculous, like a child's toy version of the 216 scaled up to life size. 0-4-0 with coupled wheels. this specimen is sitting indoors in a museum, and it's painted in the standard shunter livery The one-of-a-kind FS 209.003 shunter looks like a shoebox on rails, much shorter and boxier than you can imagine. It's symmetrical and it has four doors that don't close, two per side. 0-4-0, except the wheels are almost invisible and it looks like it's floating over the rails. When you were a kid—sorry, but it’s true—we didn’t have all these phones. Digital text has calcified your brain in the same way that written text calcified the Yugoslav bards’. It’s not a question of attention span, because the dominant discursive modes online seems to be the multi-hour-long video essay or the interminable live stream in which literally nothing is said. But digital text makes the distemporality of ordinary text unbearable. To sit still and read a book for hours on the trot, you have to suppress the rising itch that starts on your fingertips and spreads everywhere over your skin. Make this responsive! Make this refresh! You’re experiencing the agony of the dead word of the book, where the future is already set down, waiting for you on the final page, where nothing changes… Digital text, meanwhile, is writing that functions like speech. Like speech it happens in real time, right in front of you, and then afterwards it sinks into the unreachable abysses of the feed. It’s present, it’s alive, while writing is always spectral and disjointed from itself. (Again, see Derrida to learn more than you ever wanted to know about différance and the ghostly metaphysics of non-presence and the other now-irrelevant features of this obsolete world.) This is why digital writing seems to make people much angrier than ordinary text: it seems to be addressed to you in a way that the words on a piece of paper do not.
