A delightful hermit crab owned by a friend of the family. She was a classroom pet a decade ago that their kid volunteered to take in. She has a huge tank and is well cared for but the industry behind pet hermit crabs is very sad. :(

Haven't been around in a long while. Needed a graduation card for a family friend. I didn't like the ones at the store, too sappy. So... I did it myself.

I still miss Gus. He wanted to chew on my toothbrush so bad, so in his last few days I let him bite the absolute shit out of it.
Gus, biting the absolute shit out of my toothbrush while I am crouching down to be at his level and brushing my teeth. Gus, reaching for my toothbrush because he wants to bite the shit out of it. I am helpfully squatting down so he can achieve this goal.

No going back. Trying to follow the mantra of "Doing something is always better than doing nothing." My parents bought me this 8x8 inch Ohuhu Sketchbook for my birthday last year and I need to do SOMETHING with it. Hopefully later today I'll have something to show... 🤞
A square sketchbook spread with a tinted square inset by whatever width my washi tape was. I want to say half inch? The Ohuhu alcohol marker I used is on the page it is: 26 - "Pastel Peach" very warm tone. Like white grape juice stain on a bleach white shirt. The kind moms buy for their toddlers before they learn to never dress a toddler in white and give them white grape juice. Bad things will happen to the shirt.

Like I said earlier, I used only 8 colored pencils on this 3 inch by 3 inch little thing. Fun experiment, I recommend it! No black or white pencils either, which was for the better.

I have a better idea for the next experiment. I know what colors I like and the ones I'll avoid...

An experiment using just eight colored pencils... Could be worse.
A multicolored heap of trash. A junked car under some mulch with bushes and trees dotted around. I did this using only 8 colored pencils and honestly it shows.

Art haul!! Got these three bad boys today at my local Michaels! Can't wait to use them, I want to do a friend of the family's sheep dog.... I'll probably need to learn how to do fur... Hmmm.

My favorite part about making something is actually this. Looking back and getting to see the entire journey again.

Finally finished this tedious 5x7 inch piece. I started this on October 30th, 2024 and finished it on January 9th, 2025.

"I will never touch colored pencils again!" I say, with another colored pencil piece planned...

A gold and green frame to contain 2 months of pain and suffering in the form of a colored pencil piece. A rusted husk of a car with a orange/yellow tree growing from where the engine would be. The reference photo was thrown away early into this process. I weep. The grass is yellow. The grass is dying. I am dying. There is a mountain of trees, then a mountain of green. Then mountains of blue. Then finally, the blue sky. The "sun" bleeds through the leaves, I guess.

A disaster. But more descriptively: a mixed media art piece among a messy palette, a make up brush, and a "test" sheet where I painstakingly made more blue mountains specifically to experiment with ways to fix my main piece.

My mom blew my hair dry (with a hair dryer) to help me disguise my bangs. Thanks mom!

For my 28th birthday last month I got bangs. Within 48 hours I would regret them.

Do not get bangs if the last time you had bangs you were still working on your multiplication tables. It's not going to work out.
A selfie, by the window. It is snowing outside. Please stop snowing. A selfie but my mom made me laugh so i look slightly constipated. Me realizing I have 7 forehead wrinkles which if I multiply by 4 equals my age. 28. Which brings me back to the last time I had bangs I was working on remembering the multiplication table. Makes you think, doesn't it?

A head looking down at his lack of body, clearly mad that I didn't finish the rest of him. Brows pinched together. Used some multicolored colored pencils to do this because they are crappy colored pencils. They were expensive and I dislike them. So they are now sketch pencils. Really expensive and dumb sketch pencils.

When this stunning photo of a swallowtail sipping on a pink/orange zinnia popped up on my feed I just had to draw it. Hope you don't mind me referencing your amazing photo, I had a lot of fun. (And annihilated a few #prismacolor #coloredpencils in the process... RIP PC929 "Rose")
A two by three grid of images showing the slow progress of drawing a blue swallowtail (inaccurately) on a pinkish-orange zinnia (also inaccurately) based on the photo I quote-posted. The top left image shows mostly pink petals. The top middle shows the first lower zinnia complete with a partial blue swallowtail with its body and lower wing segment done. The flower now has a green stem and middle yellow bit that I kind of made up as I went along. Top right shows the entire right wing of the butterfly done and now I begin coloring a block of teal behind the butterfly and flower in acrylic paint pen. Specifically Sharpies Creative Acrylic Paint Pens. I am on the fence about them, took some fiddling to get a smooth lay down. I'm not angry, just not holding back the facts. For a few minutes there everything was all... you could see pen marks real bad. Bottom left I start to regret doing this in colored pencil as the left wing of the butterfly is now complete, the stem of the second flower done, and the teal background creeps up the page looking like a child colored in the sky with a water-based crayola marker- sorry, I said I wasn't mad. Bottom center sees most of the second flower done and this is where my "Rose" Prismacolor colored pencil begged for death. The bottom right shows the complete piece- minus my signature. I am not too worried about someone stealing this as I basically referenced a photo I do not own to make it (I do not sell art/prints, I am purely a hobby artist trying her best.) This render now lives in a frame in my room. To forever remind me of what I lost: My Rose Prismacolor colored pencil. That's what I lost. Prismacolor says "Oh, we have our pencils available open-stock, just buy a replacement!" $2.29 at my local art store. For one pencil. You're darn tooting right I was carving that pencil with a knife towards the end. Eventually though the pencil extenders just don't have anything to grip. That's life, sometimes you lose your grip on things.

A photo of a sketchbook, white paper except where the erasable colored pencil had a meltdown and smudged everywhere. On the left side there is a blue rectangle. Centered on the rectangle are two flowers and a butterfly. On the right the same butterfly appears two more times along with the lower flower now in color. Taped haphazardly to the page there are two tracing paper cut outs. One of the lower flower from the left. One of the butterfly. I didn't want to toss them as I used them to refine my butterfly after my initial sketch on the left. In the bottom left I wrote: "Photo Reference: @friendshipdave.wtf Aug 11th, 2024" because that is the Bluesky handle of the person that posted the photo I used to draw this. I don't know them and they don't know me so I won't tag them. It's awkward on here, should I have asked for permission? I don't sell my artwork, i just wanted to doodle their butterfly photo. If I ever make something more "final" looking in reference to their photo I'll post it as a quote repost of their original post with the photo. I think that's fair. Please stop reading the alt text now.

Four pictures of an in progress colored pencil tree. In the top left there is the idea of a tree with clumps of leaves in areas of light. A ball of white breaks through the upper leaves, supposedly this is the sun but two people have asked me "hey, what's that white ball in the tree?" and now I am sad about it. You try and make the sun on toned tan paper. Go on, do it. Not so easy is it? Anyways, as I was saying: In the top left the artist (loose definition) adds depth with darker leaves and three trunks. Yeah it's one of those trees that comes up as three or more trunks. I used to try and climb them as a kid but they were always slippery. In the bottom left the tree fills in and branches are added. In the bottom right the tree has any gaps filled in. In all four parts of the grid there is a light sketch of the abandoned car the tree is growing from. Another grid. Another week of rolling my boulder up the mountain. In the top left quadrant I have added a hopefully metal looking bumper. "Hey, why does that bumper have bird crap all over it?" They ask. Crippling depression aside and moving into the top right quadrant there is now grass. It is yellow and hopefully plush looking. Have I mentioned I don't know what I am doing? In the bottom left the car gains a rusty body. It is a green-blue car coated in rust. I can smell the tetanus shot. The lower right quadrant sees the car mostly done, however I have plans to come back. The sky is coming in slowly. Blue with clouds. The light outline of a mountain and forest stretches behind the tree and car. I don't want to think about how I'll do the mountain with all the trees.... So I won't.
