Long story short, it's good to mix in both for maximum gym growth/weight loss/whatever your goals are. Rowing/biking also great cardio options... especially rowing it will HUMBLE you!

It is absolutely different muscle groups. The elliptical is much harder on the front of your legs (quads) than it is on the back. Running and incline walking when done with accurate form are hamstring and glute focused. Plus with the wheel structure on the elliptical your speed will be way higher
